Hockey Day in America - Mostly

Today is Hockey Day in America, a part of Hockey Weekend Across America.

HWAA 2014 logo photo HWAA2014logo.jpg

Coverage on NBC begins at 12 noon eastern time with a Metropolitan Division matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals in Washington.

The day then moves west for the Tim Horton's NHL Heritage Classic outdoor game between the host Vancouver Canucks and the Ottawa Senators at BC Place in Vancouver at 4:00 PM, which we must point out is not in the United States and may not even be outdoors!

BC Place is a retractable roof stadium and, while the plan is to have the roof open if at all possible, weather conditions may dictate the roof be closed in the event of either rain or excessive sunlight causing glare or soft ice issues.

That said, the game will be the most visually interesting of the day as the teams will be wearing throwback "sweaters" in recognition of the 1915 Stanley Cup Finals between the Cyclone Taylor-led Vancouver Millionaires and the original Ottawa Senators.

Vancouver will be wearing their Vancouver Millionaires throwbacks, which they have worn once before during a game on March 16, 2013.

The Senators will be sporting a cream version of their awesome black heritage alternate jerseys, which draws heavily from the original Senators barberpole jerseys.

This will be the 13th outdoor game in recent NHL history, with the first being the first Heritage Classic back on November of 2003 in Edmonton. Since that time, six Winter Classics and a second Heritage Classic have been held before the four Stadium Series games took place this season, with the last one being last night's Chicago Blackhawks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins game.

With the Canadian portion of Hockey Day in America completed, NBCSN will air an Original Six matchup between the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins at 7:30 from Madison Square Garden in Manhattan to close out the day.

2013 Hockey Day in America and the Hockey City Classic

Today is the sixth annual Hockey Day in America and there is plenty of hockey on tap today with events happening from Fairbanks, Alaska to Hartford, Connecticut to Oakland, California.

Hockey Day in America logo photo HDIA2013.jpg

The event is a part of Hockey Weekend Across America, which began Friday with "Wear Your Favorite Jersey Day", which we participated in by wearing our 1960 United States Olympic Team jersey from the silver medal winning squad from Squaw Valley.

Saturday was "Try Hockey Day" with approximately 200 rinks nationwide offering opportunities to both youth and adults to sample free clinics on the game.

The theme today is "Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day", during which local communities are encouraged to honor their area hockey heroes.

NBC's coverage of the NHL begins at noon Eastern Time will be based in New York's Central Park and will begin with a triple header of games, beginning with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins traveling to face Ryan Miller, Thomas Vanek and the Buffalo Sabres, which should come as no surprise considering NBC does stand for Nothing But Crosby.

The second NHL game of the day sees the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings with Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter visiting Johnathan Toews, Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks in the Windy City at 3:30, also on NBC.

CHI vs LA photo CHIvsLA.jpg

Coverage will then move to the NBC Sports Network for Game #3 of the tripleheader, which highlights Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals taking on the host New York Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist at 6 PM.

There's plenty of other games on the NHL schedule in addition to NBC's slate of games, the Ottawa Senators vs. the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers vs. the New York Islanders (both at 1 PM) the Detroit Red Wings vs. the Minnesota Wild, the Boston Bruins vs. the Winnipeg Jets and the Calgary Flames vs. the Dallas Stars (all at 6 PM), the St. Louis Blues vs. the Vancouver Canucks close out the day at 9 PM.

If you missed the fact the Winter Classic wasn't played this year or are a fan of college hockey, then the Hockey City Classic outdoors at the Chicago Bears' Soldier Field is the event for you. The #12 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will battle the #3 Miami University Redhawks, both of the CCHA, in the first game at 1 PM est in a game televised on Fox Sports Net, while the second game sees #18, the Wisconsin Badgers facing WCHA arch rivals and the #2 ranked University of Minnesota Golden Gophers on the Big Ten Network at 4:30 est.

Hockey City Classic logo photo 2013HockeyCityClassiclogo.jpg

All four teams have unveiled special new jerseys for the Hockey City Classic as well. Notre Dame will wear throwback jerseys in the style they originally wore from 1963 to 1968. They are simple, attractive and have stood the test of time extremely well. They are going to look great on the ice and will make for a sharp team photo.

Miami University created a brand new jersey with a vintage feel, opting for tan instead of white and a lace-up collar. Unfortunately, they scuttled the entire project by opting for a three color version of their modern (and overly-beveled) current logo instead of reprising their classic block M logo of the past, which would have made a world of difference in the retro look of this jersey, which is really a shame.

One saving grace for this package is the silhouette of the state of Ohio for the captain's "C" in the style used by the NHL's Cleveland Barons for their sleeve numbers back in 1976-77.

Minnesota jerseys are based on those first worn in 1960-61, with "Gophers" diagonally down the front,  a lace-up collar. They also feature a two-color number on the upper left chest and back with the names in white using their current, serifed font, which ties in nicely with the cresting on the front. Overall, a nice looking effort that is faithful to the original style.

Wisconsin, who will be participating in their third outdoor game, chose to replicate their simple, effective sweaters they wore back in the 1931-32 season. They have the multiple stripes popular in it's era and, yes, laces are once again present with "Wisconsin" arched in a simple font and one color numbers.

Details include the captain's "C" in a two color circle, the Bob Johnson quote "It's a Great Day for Hockey" inside the collar and a special logo commemorating the Hockey City Classic inside the rear hem and a shoulder patch commemorating the 50th anniversary of the modern era of the Badger program.

Of note, all four teams will wear a Hockey City Classic patch on their jerseys as well.

With two outdoor college games and the Blackhawks hosting the Kings, Chicago is the place to be today for Hockey Day in America, while fans at home have plenty of NHL and NCAA action to choose between, as their will be no less than five games broadcast nationally today.

Hockey Day in America Report

Sunday was Hockey Day in America on NBC, a part of USA Hockey's Hockey Weekend in America.

Photobucket

The NBC coverage of the event was based out of St. Paul, Minnesota, with the pre-game show broadcast from the Wells Fargo WinterSkate, an annual outdoor skating rink set up on the street in front of the picturesque Landmark Center, just a couple of blocks from the Xcel Energy Center, home of the Minnesota Wild, who were hosting the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in NBC's national game following their earlier regional games.

Photobucket

We began our day by arriving at the WinterSkate at 11 AM in time to see Liam McHugh, Eddie Olczyk, Mike Milbury and Pierre McGuire do the NBC pre-game show from a stage overlooking the rink, where youth hockey players were demonstrating USA Hockey's American Development Model of practice drills. We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to briefly chat with Milbury and really enjoyed hearing some of McGuire's anecdotes from covering the 2005 World Juniors in Grand Forks, North Dakota where temperatures of -40º made life difficult for the TV crews.

Photobucket

Shortly thereafter, the mascots arrived from the five Division 1 college hockey programs in the state of Minnesota, Bemidji State, Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota State and St. Cloud State as well as Nordy from the Wild. After creating a mix of atmosphere and havoc in the background of the NBC broadcast and entertaining the children in attendance while suffering all manner of abuse by kids who would just as soon punch them as high-five them.

Photobucket

The mascots then retreated to the safety of a pair of tents for their autograph session.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Following the mascot autograph session, we made out way over to the giant USA hockey jersey where we met USA National Team member (and Minnesota Gopher) Amanda Kessel, sister of the Toronto Maple Leafs Phil Kessel. There, we were able to get an autographed card from Amanda and and took the opportunity to sign the giant jersey, as it will be taken to Burlington, Vermont, where it will hang in the arena during the 2012 Women's World Hockey Championships in April.

Photobucket

Walking around some more, we ran into readers Richard and Jayson, who recognized our jersey and from our post on Saturday, and were each given one of our Third String Goalie hockey cards for spotting us in our 1960 USA jersey! The pair were certainly hard to miss, with Richard in his Dallas Stars "Mooterus" alternate jersey and Jayson in his Mighty Ducks jersey as worn in the feature film which inspired the name of the NHL club.

Photobucket

We also struck up a conversation with Kris, who had the most unique Wild jersey we spotted all day, adorned with the franchise history of patches as well as the excellent choice of Sergei Zholtok's name and number on the back.

Photobucket

While the early NHL game of the day was shown on a large screen TV set up at the WinterSkate, the next autograph session began, which featured Minnesota North Stars alumni Reed Larson, Don Beaupre, Steve Payne, Chris Dahlquist, David Jensen, Brad Maxwell and Neal Broten, the first American player to ever score 100 points in the NHL.

Photobucket

While the North Stars alumni were scheduled to play a game against the local Media All-Stars, we had promised our mite hockey player that we would be inside the Xcel Energy Center in time for the pre-game warmup for the Wild vs. Bruins game, scheduled for the same time, but before going into the arena, we stopped to have our picture taken with the Herb Brooks statue.

Photobucket

The game itself offered little hope to even the most die-hard Wild fan, as the Wild have had the league's worst record since mid-December and had lost seven straight heading into the contest with the defending champion Bruins and were playing without their captain Mikko Koivu. Still, a standing room only crowd of over 19,000 fans filled the arena for the nationally televised game.

Photobucket

Low and behold, the Wild held the Bruins off the board to finish the first period scoreless after being outshot 14-12, turning away a pair of Bruins breakaway chances.

Photobucket

Between periods, we went for a walk and took in some of the sights around the arena, the most notable displays being a tribute to the Minnesotan's inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota, (from right to left) Henry Boucha, Mike Karakas, Lou Nanne, Tony Conroy and Neal Broten.

Photobucket

We also took a moment to stop by the new Derek Boogaard tribute next to the Zholtok tribute for the late Latvian and former Wild captain.

Photobucket

The second period was one of remarkable occurrences, as first Dany Heatley made a slick pass to recent call-up and Minnesota naive Chad Rau, who had taken off for the Bruins end following the change in possession. Rau's body language telegraphed a pass to Marco Scandella all the way, which got Bruins all-star goaltender Tim Thomas to cheat to the left which allowed Rau to fire an unexpected shot past Zedeno Chara and Thomas and into the net for a 1-0 Wild lead, making Rau the first player outside of Heatley, Koivu or Devin Setoguchi to score for the goal-starved Wild since February 4th, over two weeks time.

Wonders never ceased when another Minnesota native, Matt Cullen scored his first goal in 16 games, his first point of any kind in 9 and his first power play goal in over three months, which he called a "big relief".

Photobucket

Boston threw everything they had at the Wild in the third period, outshooting the home club by a vast 22-3 margin, but Niklas Backstrom held firm in the Wild goal to record a career high 48 saves, the most ever by a Wild goaltender in a shutout to earn the game's #1 star award.

Photobucket

Rau's first goal of the game was thus he game winner, his second game winner out of the two goals he has scored all season, with his first coming on Hockey Day in Minnesota, and his second now on Hockey Day in America!

Rau was not even expected to be in the Wild lineup, and was only recalled from the AHL's Houston Aeros the night before as a precaution in case Warren Peters was suspended for his crosscheck to the head of the St. Louis Blues David Backes the day before.

Rau's journey began in Abbotsford, British Columbia on Saturday when he received a text from the Aeros General Manager. At that point Rau began to do his best impression of the Dawson City Nuggets, when he first took a cab from Abbotford nearly two hours to the Vancouver airport for a flight to Los Angeles, where he missed his 9:45 PM connection to Minneapolis. He was able to take the red-eye flight, arriving at 6:45 AM, in time to have breakfast and take a nap before heading to the arena with his place in the lineup confirmed with the announcement of Peters one game suspension.

Following the conclusion of the game, our mite noticed the arena staff bringing more nets out onto the ice, not taking the two game nets away, which signaled the traditional Sunday afternoon post-game chance for kids to go out onto the ice and shoot a puck at one of the three nets.

Photobucket

After each child had taken their turn on the ice, they received a very nice souvenir puck, complete with the date of the game and the opponent printed on it - a nice memento courtesy of the Wild a first class organization in every respect.

Photobucket

Here is the collection of items we came home with: the mascot autograph sheet, seven signed North Stars alumni cards, our game program, a Guillaume Latendresse trading card given away at the gate, signed cards from Minnesota's favorite vendor Wally the Beerman and Amanda Kessel and the souvenir puck - total cost - $3 for the program with the proceeds going to a local youth hockey program.

Photobucket

It was a really fun day being at the center of Hockey Day in America, meeting some nice people, getting some autographs and having the home team pull off a rather unexpected shutout win, all while sharing the day with our own little hockey player.

Hockey Weekend Across America, Hockey Weekend Across America

NBC's coverage will begin at noon Eastern time Sunday with a series of regional games, Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks vs. Detroit Red Wings or St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks, followed by the national broadcast of the Boston Bruins visiting the Minnesota Wild, a game we at Third String Goalie will be in attendance for living up to our name by wearing a jersey while in the stands. Coverage then shifts to the NBC Sports Network for the New Jersey Devils at the Montreal Canadiens followed by NHL Live and NHL Overtime to wrap up nine hours of coverage.

Other stories to be covered as part of Hockey Day in America are a game between Roseau High School and Warroad High School from northern Minnesota, the Tampa Bay Lightning's Sled Hockey program and a look at USA Hockey's National Development Program, which runs the country's Under 18 and Under 20 junior programs.

There will also be a live event from the Wells Fargo WinterSkate rink in downtown St. Paul starting at 10 AM, a block from the XCel Energy Center.

Liam McHugh, Ed Olczyk, Mike Milbury and his close personal friend Pierre McGuire will broadcast from the WinterSkate during NBC's coverage, which will feature at times demonstrations of USA Hockey's Advance Development Model, the NBC Pre-Game Show, a Mascot Autograph session, live look-in's between periods of the early regional games, a local radio broadcast by KFAN, a Minnesota North Stars alumni autograph session, including 1980 USA Olympic gold medal winner Neal Broten, and a North Stars Alumni vs. Media All-Stars game prior to the Wild taking on the Bruins at 2:30.

It should be a great day for hockey fans, either watching on TV or for those of you able to take in a live event in your area, particularly if you are located in the Twin Cities and have the opportunity to come to downtown St. Paul where the Wild will host Hockey Day in America and the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins.

Hockey Day in America and the Heritage Classic

Today is the final day of Hockey Weekend Across America, a three day celebration of hockey in the United States.

Hockey Weekend 2011

As part of the fourth annual Hockey Weekend Across America, Friday was "Wear Your Jersey Day", which we were more than happy to participate in, choosing this fine example of the red, white and blue's finest moment, a 1980 United States Olympic Team Mike Eruzione jersey from "The Miracle On Ice", the number one moment in the IIHF countdown of the 100 Top Stories of the Century.

USA 1980 F
USA 1980 B

Saturday was "Bring a Friend to the Rink" day, and we obliged by bringing our mite and his friend to the first ever Minnesota Wild outdoor hockey practice today at the John Rose Oval.

John Rose Oval

We could not participate in the open skate which followed afterwards, as we were on our way to our mite's Minneapolis Storm youth hockey practice at Minneapolis' Parade Ice Garden.

Minneapolis Storm

Which bring us to today, which as been declared Hockey Day in America, during which NBC will have six hours of coverage beginning with a pregame show from Chicago at noon Eastern time (11AM Central), followed by three regional games: the Washington Capitals vs. the Buffalo Sabres, the Philadelphia Flyers vs. the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings vs. the Minnesota Wild.

When the early games are completed, NBC will then show the entire nation the Pittsburgh Penguins visiting the Chicago Blackhawks at 3:30. There will also be feature stories throughout the day on other grassroots level hockey stories.

After the conclusion of the Penguins and Blackhawks game, attention shifts north of the border to Canada, where the Montreal Canadiens will face off against the host Calgary Flames in the Heritage Classic outdoors at McMahon Stadium, home to the Calgary Stampede of the Canadian Football League at 6PM eastern, 4PM in Calgary.

Heritage Classic Logo

As is the case with the previous four NHL outdoor games, both teams will wear special jerseys for the event. While Montreal's jersey is the familiar white jersey worn since 1947, the numbers on the jersey will be in the color combination worn during 1986 and 1989 (two color numbers, blue outlined in red) when the Canadiens faced off against the Flames in the Stanley Cup Finals. It will also have the Heritage Classic event patch on the right chest.

The Flames however, went "off the board" and created a very unusual and unexpected design, done in the striping pattern of the 1924 Calgary Tigers of the Western Canada Hockey League, the first team from Calgary to ever play for the Stanley Cup. The sweaters have the obvious addition of the Flames "flaming C" logo and the Heritage Classic patch on the right chest.

Calgary Then and Now
The Calgary Tigers, then and now

Here is video of the official unveiling of the Heritage Classic jerseys.

The game should avoid the weather issues that plagued this year's Winter Classic, with the forecast calling for temperatures reaching a high of -9ºC/16ºF and partly cloudy skies with the temperatures dropping through the game and the skies clearing to close out a great day of hockey on both sides of the border.
